Session-33 and 34
10 Jan 2022 and 11 Jan 2022
We started the discussion on how staffing is affected by the external and internal environment. Some of the factors are listed in the chart below.
Next, we discussed, in brief, the process of selection. The process of picking a qualified person from a vast pool of qualified people, who can successfully perform a job and contribute to the organisation is known as selection. With the help of a video, we understood how the process of selection takes place. The video focused on how people in Formula 1 car racing are recruited and then trained to actually deliver the desired results effectively. We saw how things have changed over time in F1 racing, hence changing the process of selection. This is because people have to be selected according to the roles and their skills and attitude should match with these roles.
Analytical and problem-solving skills are considered essential in managers apart from their personal characteristics. In order to match qualifications with the position required an organization will use the process of Selection, Placement and Promotion. Next, we discussed the Peter Principle. The Peter Principle states that most organisational hierarchies, such as those of a corporation, have a tendency for each person to ascend through the ranks by promotion until they reach a point of relative incompetence. For example- a competent front-office secretary may be promoted to executive assistant to the CEO, despite the fact that she lacks the necessary training and experience—implying that she would be more productive for the firm (and presumably herself) if she had not been promoted.
